the gift of selfless serviceIndian people are very friendly, and they love to talk to Westerners. They are always willing to chat and tell you about their lives, and they love to have their photos taken. It is not uncommon for complete strangers to invite you to their home to share a cup of tea or a meal.

Unlike the United States and Europe, where religion and spirituality are very private matters, Indian culture encourages discussion about matters of spirit. There is no proselytizing; they are simply very excited to share their spiritual path and their culture with Westerners.

Karma yoga is the practice of selfless service. India, for all its beauty, is very poor. It is common for Westerners to see things in India that are beyond belief. This can be overwhelming at first, but often people feel deeply drawn to try and make a difference while there. There are many opportunities for karma yoga in places such as schools, orphanages and hospitals.

Mother Miracle School
The Mother Miracle School in Rishikesh is a wonderful way for you to do karma yoga. Many people like to sponsor a child and become pen pals prior to the retreat, and then spend time with the sponsored child while in India. Often times the child you sponsor will become your personal tour guide in Rishikesh and their family will likely invite you to dinner at their home.
The school offers classes, meals and basic health care to some of India’s poorest children.
